The Compost sieve is used to
filter
out unwanted items from your compost,
leaving pure, rich, sifted compost. Many people who make
compost at home will find unwanted elements in it such as stones,
pebbles, twigs, leaves, and solid organic materials. Stones
and pebbles probably litter your garden already and organic materials
that haven't broken down in your home composting bin are not at all
harmful to your garden. However, there are good reasons for eliminating
these items from your garden compost:
- Removing large items from your compost helps small seedlings
that may be unable to grow if they are suffocated or damaged by stones
or solid organic waste that has not broken down fully in your compost
bin.
- Many home composters invest a lot of time in producing
healthy, rich fertilizer for their gardens and want their home compost
to look like fertilizer you buy from the garden centre, but without the chemicals.
To achieve this look you will need to sieve your home compost.
Compost filtering methods
It
is possible to filter large or unwanted elements from your compost by
hand, but it is far easier and faster to use a compost sieve. Simply
pour your compost on to the tray, and shake the compost allowing fine
grains of fertilizer to pass through the tray and the harder objects to
remain in the sieve.
Fine grain compost is perfect for all your gardening needs and the best
fertilizer for young seedlings.
